Raden is a traditional Chinese decorative technique involving the inlaying of nacre into lacquer or wood surfaces. The art of inlaying seashells or snail shells onto surfaces of objects, known as "螺钿" (luó diàn), originated from China's Zhou Dynasty and has spread throughout East Asia. Shells used include abalone, blue pearl mussel, moon snail, white butterfly shell, mother-of-pearl, amber, and tortoiseshell.
